What to Expect

The cross that stands here commemorates twenty-one Franciscan friars and nearly 380 Spanish colonists killed during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 — a moment that was also, depending on where you stand, an act of liberation. The Franciscan presence in New Mexico carried beauty and violence in the same hands: conversion by force, cultural suppression, a landscape reshaped by people who believed they were saving it.

This painting session is intended as an opportunity to engage with the landscape, history, and ongoing dialogue connected to this site through an artistic lens. Participation in this event does not constitute an endorsement of colonial violence or oppression but rather an invitation to reflect on the layered and multifaceted history of New Mexico.

Join us for an immersive painting experience inspired by the breathtaking overlook, where Santa Fe’s glowing sunsets and desert colors become your canvas.

During the session, you can expect:

  • Step-by-step instruction

  • A loose art history lesson

  • A relaxed, slow atmosphere

  • All painting materials provided

  • Guidance on blending color, creating depth, and capturing the warm New Mexico landscape

  • Creative freedom to personalize your piece and make it your own

We’ll explore the rich tones and dramatic light that make Santa Fe feel almost painted by the sky itself: deep adobe reds, dusty lavender mountains, glowing clouds, and golden horizon light.
